Moon on My Head. 2024
New paintings by Jeff Raglus.

If you’re lucky, you’ll witness 1000 full moons in your lifetime.

2024 was a year of balancing personal issues with my art practice. It was a year in which I became acutely aware of the shortness and beauty of life.

I started this body of work in the winter of 2023. Most of the sculptures were started at my mother’s property in Kilmore from old fallen trees.

I had been looking after my mum since the Covid lockdowns, and she passed away in April this year. This had a big effect on my work around the middle of this year and perhaps gave me a chance to refocus and draw on some older ideas that hadn’t been fully realised.

A lot of my work often starts with free-hand drawings, which are then painted onto small birch-ply boards. If I’m happy with these, they might up as bigger versions (hence the ‘large’ versions in this collection) or they may even be sculptured in wood. For quite a while, I have been exploring organic shapes and how they relate to each other set in semi-abstract or surreal landscapes. Moon On My Head is a continuation of these themes.

I rarely noticed the moon in Melbourne.
Living on the coast its volume is apparent.
